Star Wars Day: The Force is strong with these ten records

For many a science fiction fan within this galaxy, May 4 marks Star Wars Day – an annual event which sees aficionados of the hugely successful movie series celebrate Star Wars culture all over the world.

In case you hadn’t guessed, the date relates to a pun on one of the space saga’s most quoted lines – “May the force be with you”.

To mark today's occasion, we’ve delved deep into the Sarlacc pit-like depths of our database to bring you ten of our favourite Star Wars-related Guinness World Records titles.

1. Highest box-office film gross by a science-fiction film series

As of 16 January 2017, the films in the Star Wars series had collectively – including re-issues and special editions – grossed a staggering $7,456,076,338 worldwide at the box office, according to figures from The Numbers. This figure includes the box-office gross for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the latest instalment which was released in December 2016.

2. Highest-grossing live-action film with a female star

With a total worldwide box office gross of $1,050,789,328 (£844,652,000) as of 12 April 2017, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) – in which Felicity Jones (UK) takes top billing as Jyn Erso – is the highest-grossing film ever to feature a woman as the top-billed star.

3. Biggest Hollywood movie premiere

On 14 Dec 2015, the Los Angeles premiere of The Force Awakens took place across a quarter-mile stretch of Hollywood Boulevard. The film screened in three venues – the TCL Chinese Theatre, the Dolby Theatre and El Capitan – with a total capacity of 6,700 seats.

4. Most expensive figurines sold at auction

A sale of Action Man and Star Wars figurines and accessories made £180,000 ($256,800) at Vectis Toy Auction House in Thornaby, North Yorkshire, UK, on 27 May 2015. Until then, they had languished in the garage of retired toy-sales rep Doug Carpenter. He had been allowed to keep them after manufacturer Palitoy ceased trading in the 1980s.?
