‘Make Them Do It Compulsorily’- Reno Omokri Tells NBC To Make Nigerian Newscasters Wear Local Clothes, Speak Nigerian Accents

Former presidential aide and author Reno Omokri has called on the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to mandate Nigerian newscasters and on-air personalities to wear locally made clothes and speak with Nigerian accents.

Omokri made the call in a post on X on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, arguing that broadcast media has a responsibility to promote and protect Nigerian culture.

He wrote: “Is it not possible for the National Broadcasting Commission to mandate that Nigerian newscasters and on-air personalities wear made-in-Nigeria clothes and speak in Nigerian accents? The rate at which Nigerian journalists wear foreign clothes and speak in real and contrived foreign accents is alarming.”

According to him, Nigerian broadcasters should willingly promote local culture, but he suggested that the government could intervene if they fail to do so.

He added: “Part of the job of the broadcast media is to project, protect and promote Nigerian culture. It is a responsibility. An obligation. If they will not do it willingly, then perhaps the government could step in to make them do it compulsorily.”

The proposal has generated mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians supporting the idea of promoting Nigerian accents while questioning whether clothing should be regulated.
