Toke Makinwa clashes with netizen over her stance on tribal marks

Media personality Toke Makinwa found herself in a heated exchange with a netizen after sharing her views on tribal marks.

Toke Makinwa took to the microblogging platform X to share her thoughts after seeing a beautiful influencer with tribal marks, reflecting on the cruelty of certain cultural practices.

She argued that marking a child without their consent for identification purposes is cruel, although she acknowledged that parents in the past were unaware of this.

Grateful that the tradition has been abolished, Toke reminisced about her grandmother, who had tribal marks on her face and arms, and wondered how she managed with them at a young age.

She wrote: “Today I saw a beautiful beauty influencer with tribal marks and it made me think about the cruelty that culture brought upon us. Marking a child without his/her consent as a means of identification is Evil, I know our parents didn’t know any better but damnnnn!!!!

“Thank God it’s abolished now. My grandma had tribal marks too. Some on her face and her arms, I wonder what life was like when she was younger walking around with it, though I’m sure a lot of people around her had same but thank God it’s canceled now.”

Reacting to her post, an X user @alaba_beverly wrote: “Tribal marks and tattoos, what’s the difference? Tattoos are modernized tribal marks. Rest abeg.”

Toke Makinwa replied: “Tattoos are a choice, marking a child without their consent is not the same. You rest, weirdo 🙄”
