Two killed, many abducted in Niger terror attack

Two people have died in a terrorist attack in communities in the Munya Local Government Area in Niger State.

The terrorists also abducted several residents in a renewed attack which was said to have started five days ago ending three months of respite.

A community in Munya, Zazaga was the target of the latest attacks, which occurred on Tuesday, resulting in the loss of two lives, kidnappings, raiding of shops and houses and cattle rustling.

The Chairman of the Munya Local Government Area, Nagumi Kuchi, on Wednesday, confirmed the attack in a chat with journalists at the annual stakeholders flood sensitisation and awareness forum organised by the North-South Power Company Limited.

“In the past three months, Munya has experienced peace but for the past five days, there has been a resurgence of terrorist attacks and it has become a daily occurrence.

“One of the communities mostly affected is Zazaga community and as of yesterday, the terrorists attacked again, killing two people and the number of people kidnapped is not yet confirmed. They also burgled several shops and rustled several cattle,” he said.

Kuchi, however, expressed the belief that the state government’s proactiveness in combating insecurity would bring an end to the attacks in Munya and other local government areas bedeviled by insecurity.

During the flood sensitisation programme, the Vice Chairman of North-South Power Company, Mr Olubumi Peters, explained that the workshop was to educate communities and people involved in any form of water-based activities, upstream and downstream of the Shiroro Hydro Electric Power Plant on the environmental hazard caused by flooding and possible ways to reduce the devastation to lives and property.

Peters, who was represented by Hassan Abdullahi, said stakeholders needed to institute appropriate measures by developing new strategies and identifying the most effective and economical remedies to flooding.

The Niger State Meteorological Inspector, Mr Pwajok Gyang, called on all relevant mitigation, risk, and disaster management agencies to take necessary steps to guard against or reduce to the barest minimum, whatever negative effects the expected floods will cause the communities that are already at risk.
