Lawmakers deny plan to impeach Abia gov

The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party and the state House of Assembly have said they have no plans to impeach Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

They were reacting to rumours in the social media that the move was due to the PDP’s loss at the just concluded governorship election.

Sunday PUNCH reports that the Labour Party candidate, Dr Alex Otti, was declared the winner of the election after polling 175,466 votes to defeat his closest rival and candidate of the PDP, Okey Ahiwe, who scored 88,526 votes.

Dismissing the rumours, the state PDP Vice-Chairman/Acting state Publicity Secretary, Chief Abraham Amah, in a Saturday statement, titled, ‘No plans to impeach Abia governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu’, said the rumours were ‘unfounded and a figment of the wild imaginations of rumour mongers’.

Amah noted that the PDP had held meetings with its members in the House of Assembly as well as members of the opposition party, adding that there was no iota of truth in the impeachment rumour.

He added, “The impeachment is a hoax because the governor has not committed any impeachable offence that will warrant members of the Abia State House of Assembly to impeach him in about two months to the end of his meritorious and peaceful service to the good people of the state.”

He added that the governor, being “a man of peace” had congratulated Otti and promised to provide him with a smooth transition that would enable him to hit the ground running once he is sworn into office.

Meanwhile, Ikpeazu’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Onyebuchi Ememanka, corroborating the party’s stance, in a statement on Saturday, said the governor had met with the deputy speaker, Ifeanyi Uchendu, who dismissed the rumours.

Also, the Majority Leader, Solomon Akpulonu, and Minority Leader, Chukwu Chijioke, described the statement as false, noting that the members of the House were yet to reconvene after the elections.
