Fifty-year-old Japanese footballer Kazuyoshi Miura becomes world’s oldest goal scorer

Two weeks after his 50th birthday, Kazuyoshi Miura has become the Oldest professional football (soccer) player to score a competitive league goal, after leading his team Yokohama F.C. to a 1-0 win over Thespakusatsu Gunma on Sunday.

The Japanese striker, often nicknamed ‘King Kazu’, achieved the Guinness World Records title during the match at Nippatsu Mitsuzawa Stadium in Yokohama, Japan.

“I’m glad to contribute to a win,” Miura said on the day.

“I’m always looking to score but I had a good feeling about today’s game.”

Born on 26 February 1967, the forward was recruited to his current team Yokohama at the age of 38.

Prior to this he started his professional football career on the Brazilian side Santos, before going on to have stunts in Japanese teams Tokyo Verdy and Vissel Kobe. He has also played for Dinamo Zagreb, Genoa, Sydney FC and even had a trial at Bournemouth.

To date the soccer star has netted 55 goals in 89 appearances for his country.

With no plans to retire yet, Miura looks likely to extend the record further before hanging up his boots.
