Against the proposed trekking by adherents of Islamic Movement in Nigeria in protest of the continuous detention of their sect Leader, Sheik El- Zakzzaky by the Nigerian government, a group known as Coalition Against Terrorism and Extremism ((CATE) on Monday condemned the plan, saying it poses security risk.

Addressing a press conference at its Secretariat in Abuja, the group’s National Coordinator, Mr. Gabriel Onoja urged security operatives to immediately prepare to manage the situation in order to avoid what happened previously between the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai and the sect.

“We are aware of their modus operandi and if care is not taken, they maintain their culture of blocking roads and one will imagine the consequences from Kaduna even to the nation’s capital,” the group maintained.

Onoja said the federal government owes it a duty to protect other Nigerians from the extremism being promoted by the sect.

He said, “With the existential threats facing the country at every turn, the message must be sent out clearly that no religious leader or adherent is above the law. Anyone that tries to further compromise our collective security should be made to answer for their actions.”

“We urge religious, traditional and political leaders from the North to see this as a challenge and jointly call this horde to order”, he added.

“As part of a longer term solution, the government must begin to prioritize mental health as the sanity of the youths engaging in this exercise must be questioned for courting more troubles on behalf of a man whose act of treasonable felony led to the loss of many souls.”

He said the earlier face-offs by the sect with military and security operatives were not unconnected with their penchant for obstructing public roads and depriving other Nigerians of the right of way.

He said, “They are able to do this by resorting to violence and considering the extreme nature of the demand they are making, it may not be impossible for the proposed protest to turn violent.”

They emphasised that the protest would allow the sect to recruit youths, a situation it said was similar to the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA) currently threatening the peace of the nation.

“In the meantime, we are calling on the security agencies to address the threat posed by the IMN trek because of the danger it poses to national security and religious tolerance.”
