Carragher: Arsenal must buy a holding midfielder
Former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher has urged Arsene Wengerto sign a holding a midfielder in the January transfer window.
The Gunners had been interested in signing Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin although the 25-year-old has announced he is happy to remain at St Mary's until the end of the season.
Goal revealed on Thursday that Wenger's side were closing in on completing a deal for promising Poland youth international Krystian Bielikalthough Carragher has suggested that they need a player with more experience.
When asked if the Gunners need to strengthen in the holding midfield area, he toldSky Sports: "They need one [a holding midfielder]. [Mikel] Arteta was the first choice in that position.
I've never seen him as a holding midfield player. He was more of a creative midfielder during his time at Everton.
"[Francis] Coquelin was outstanding at Manchester City but is he the answer long-term? Let's have a look at him between now and the end of the season.
"They've got to sign someone in that position.

I don't think he's [Coquelin] done enough to say 'Arsenal don't need to strengthen in that area'."
