ABU suspends implementation of increased school charges
The Management of Ahmadu Bello University has informed the entire student body and the University community that it has decided to suspend implementation of the recently revised student charges, pending further consultations with the students and other relevant stakeholders.
The review of the student charges was undertaken following an extensive and comprehensive consultation involving relevant stakeholders, particularly the student body.
The review was considered necessary in view of the wide gap between available resources and the rising cost of providing essential services to students.
This financial challenge was further compounded by the loss of nearly N2.5 billion annual revenue in May 2026.
The development has placed considerable additional pressure on the University's finances and constrained its capacity to sustain and improve essential services.
The revised charges were consequently intended to provide additional resources to support the continued provision and improvement of these services, including those directly related to the students' academic experience, welfare, security, transportation, utilities and general campus life.
However, at a point when implementation is about to commence, the student body (SRC) presented Management with additional observations, concerns and requests arising from their further consideration of the revised charges.
Accordingly, the management has invited the Leadership of the SRC to discuss the issues and nature of their complaints in order to address the issues.
Management has carefully considered their submissions during the meeting which management considers to be legitimate, responsible and deserving of further considerations.
In the spirit of consultation, mutual respect and responsible governance, Management has therefore decided to suspend implementation of the revised charges to allow for wider consultations and further inputs from the student body and other relevant stakeholders.
Management particularly appreciates the mature, responsible and constructive manner in which the students have approached the matter. The University considers such conduct as important lessons in responsible citizenship and a demonstration that difficult institutional challenges can be addressed through meaningful dialogue and a sense of shared responsibility.
However, due to complaints from our well-meaning students through their respected SRC Presidents, the management has invited the leadership of the SRC to discuss the issues and get to understand the sources and nature of their complaints.
Let it be clearly understood that the decision to suspend implementation is a demonstration of Management's commitment to listening to its students and ensuring that decisions with significant implications for them receive the fullest possible consideration.
At the same time, Management remains mindful of the financial realities confronting the University and the urgent need to strengthen the resources available for the delivery of quality education.
The University must therefore continue to seek a sustainable balance between the legitimate concerns of students and the need to provide them with a conducive environment for teaching, learning, research and personal development.
Management wishes to reiterate its unwavering commitment to the welfare of the students. Management will continue to be made to ensure that the University's limited resources are deployed responsibly, transparently and in ways that maximize meaningful benefit to the student community.
The University therefore appeals for continued patience, understanding and cooperation from the students as the consultation process proceeds.
Management encourages students to continue their academic activities and have confidence in the ability of their SRC and management to sit together to resolve the issues.
Management is confident that, through constructive engagement and collaboration, a solution that supports the University's future, a responsible and sustainable resolution can be reached.
Further communication on the outcome of the consultations and the next steps will be issued in due course.

Management
