Rivers Rename Stadium After Gowon

The Rivers State Government has renamed the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt as Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt in honour of the former Head of State who created the state in 1967.

They also renamed the Old Aba Road in Port Harcourt as Yakubu Gowon Road.

In a statement yesterday signed by the Special Assistant to the State Governor on Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakaudu, the state took the step to show appreciation to Gowon for creating the state.

According to the Governor, Nyesom Wike who had earlier spoke about this, said it was not fair that a man (Gowon) who created the state has nothing in his name in the State, and that is why he will immortalise him.
