Early Life

Born Janelle Monae Robinson on December 1, 1985, in Kansas, United States. Her mother, Janet, was a janitor and a hotel maid, and her father, Michael Robinson Summers, was a truck driver. She was very young when her parents separated and her mother re-married. She has a younger sister named Kimmy, from her mother’s second marriage.

Janelle went to F.L Schlagle High School and later studied Musical theatre at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, in New York City. She dropped out of the academy after a year and a half and relocated to Atlanta, where she enrolled at Georgia Perimeter College.

Career

Janelle Monae developed her passion for music with influences from the likes of David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Outkast, Janet Jackson, Jimi Hendrix and so on.

She began writing songs and performing while at the college. She came through professionally in 2003 with the release of her demo album, The Audition. She signed with Puff Daddy’s Bad Boy Records to release her debut extended play, Metropolis: Suite 1 (The Chase) in 2007.

She released her debut studio album, The ArchAndroid in 2010 through Atlantic Records. She followed up with her second studio album, The Electric Lady in 2013. Her third studio album, Dirty Computer, and fourth studio album, The Age of Pleasure, was released in 2018 and 2023 respectively.

Monae delved into acting and came to the limelight for her role in the 2016 films Moonlight and Hidden Figures. She is also known for roles in movies like Welcome to Marwen, Antebellum, The Glorias, Uglydolls, and many others.

She unveiled her record label, Wondaland Arts Society in a joint venture with Epic Records in 2015, where she signed artists like Jidenna, Roman GianArthur, and St. Beauty.

She has won numerous awards such as; MTV Video Music Awards, Soul Train Music Awards, Teen Choice Awards, Children’s and Family Emily Awards, and Black Reel Awards.
