Following the deselection of the previous Labour MP, Ernie Roberts, Abbott successfully won a seat in Parliament in 1987.

Abbott has actively advocated for various causes, such as race relations, civil liberties, and social justice. She has also held positions in several parliamentary committees, including the Treasury Select Committee and the Foreign Affairs Select Committee.
