Early life and education

Anderson was born in Los Angeles, California, on August 15, 1970. His mother, Doris Hancox, dreamed of becoming an actress, and his stepfather, Sterling Bowman, hails from Little Rock, Arkansas.

Sterling initially moved to Los Angeles to work in the steel mill industry but later established a successful chain of three clothing stores. Anthony also has a half-brother named Derrick Bowman.

Tragically, his stepfather passed away in 2002. Anthony was affectionately called “Tugga” during childhood due to his inability to pronounce “sugar.”

Anderson’s education journey took him to Howard University in the late 1980s, where he studied before leaving without graduating to pursue a comedy career.

Career

Anderson started his professional journey in the early 1990s by appearing as a guest actor on well-known television series, including Ally McBeal, NYPD Blue, The Wayans Bros, and In the House.

However, it was in 1996 that he achieved his breakthrough when he secured his first leading role as Teddy Broadis in the teen sitcom Hang Time, which aired on NBC. Anderson’s portrayal of Teddy lasted for two seasons, showcasing his talent and establishing him as a notable presence in the industry.

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Anderson’s presence in the film industry expanded as he secured roles in several movies, such as Big Momma’s House (2000), Me, Myself & Irene (2000), and Barbershop (2002). Interestingly, Nathan has followed in his father’s footsteps and made a name for himself in the entertainment industry by starring as Tahj in the popular Netflix sitcom Richie Rich and making guest appearances on the hit show Black-ish.

2015 Anderson’s wife initiated divorce proceedings after being legally separated since April 2014. Nevertheless, the couple managed to reconcile their differences and decided to give their marriage another chance in January 2017, leading to her withdrawing the divorce petition. However, unfortunate circumstances arose again, as she filed for divorce on March 25, 2022.
