Bethany Joy Lenz is an American actress, singer-songwriter, and filmmaker.

She is best known for her role as Haley James Scott on the popular T.V. drama One Tree Hill, where she showcased her acting and singing skills for nine seasons.

She has also appeared in other shows such as Guiding Light, Dexter, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. She is also a passionate musician who has released several albums and songs as a solo artist and member of the band Everly.

Early Life & Education

Bethany Joy Lenz, who goes by her middle name Joy, was born on April 2, 1981, in Hollywood, Florida, to Robert George Lenz, a history teacher and therapist, and Catharine Malcolm Holt Shepard, a personnel manager and entrepreneur.

She has no siblings. She has German, Scottish, Irish and Australian ancestry. She moved with her family to Arlington, Texas, when she was seven.

She started singing early and joined the Creative Arts Theater and School, taking dance, tap, jazz, acting, and theater classes.

She also performed in several local and national commercials and landed her first stage role in a production of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

She attended Pope Elementary, then moved to Bedford, Texas, where she attended Harwood Junior High School and Trinity High School. She graduated from Eastern Christian High School in New Jersey. She has a four-octave vocal range.

Personal Life

After dating for about a year, Bethany Joy Lenz married Michael Jacob Galeotti, a musician and former keyboardist of the band Enation, on December 31, 2005.

They welcomed their daughter, Maria Rose Galeotti, on February 23, 2011. However, the couple announced their separation in March 2012 and finalized their divorce in 2015.

Lenz has since been romantically linked to actor Wes Ramsey, whom she met on the set of Guiding Light in 2000 and dated from 2012 to 2017.

She also dated her One Tree Hill co-star James Lafferty briefly in 2008. As of 2023, she is single and focused on her career and raising her daughter.

Career

Bethany Joy Lenz began her acting career in 1993 when she was cast as Reva Shayne’s clone on the soap opera Guiding Light.

She played the role until 1998 and appeared in several other T.V. shows and movies, such as 1973, Thinner, I Love You, I Love You Not, and Off-Broadway’s Foxy Ladies Love/Boogie 70’s Explosion.

She also pursued her musical career and formed the band Everly with her friend Amber Sweeney in 2000.

They released two E.P.s, Mission Bell and Fireside, and performed in various venues and events.

Lenz’s breakthrough role came in 2003, when she was cast as Haley James Scott, a smart and loyal high school student who marries her basketball star boyfriend, Nathan Scott, on the WB/CW drama One Tree Hill.

She played the role for nine seasons, from 2003 to 2012, and also sang several songs on the show’s soundtrack albums and performed live at charity events and concerts.

She also directed two episodes of the show and wrote and produced a web series called The Notebook Musical, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks.

After One Tree Hill ended, Lenz continued to act in various T.V. shows and movies, such as Men at Work, C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation, Songbyrd, American Gothic, Colony, Grey’s Anatomy, Dexter, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
