Mala’s political career began in 1992 when he ran for and was elected councilor for the Buni ward in the Gujba Local Government Council on the platform of the National Republican Convention (NRC) party.
He was later chosen as the council’s speaker.
He was appointed a member of the governing board of the University of Uyo in 2004 after being designated a senior legislative assistant in Nigeria’s National Assembly in 2002.
He was unanimously chosen as Chairman of the Yobe state’s Advanced Congress of Democrats in 2006.
Buni Mai Mala joined the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), which was in power at the time, in Yobe state in 2011 and was later named the governor of Yobe’s special adviser on political and legislative matters, Ibrahim Gaidam.
