Gina Carano Sues Disney Over The Mandalorian Firing, Elon Musk Funding Lawsuit

Gina Carano is suing Disney and Lucasfilm for discrimination after she was fired from her role in the Star Wars series The Mandalorian.

Carano filed a complaint on Tuesday in California federal court (via THR), alleging that she was fired for voicing right-wing thoughts and views online. In 2021, Carano was removed from her recurring role in The Mandalorian as Carasynthia “Cara” Dune following posts she made on both X and Instagram, where she implied that being a Republican was akin to being a Jewish person during the Holocaust.

In a surprise move, Elon Musk, the owner of X — formerly known as Twitter — is planning to fund the lawsuit through the company, a move that comes after Musk promised to help fund legal bills for users who believe they were wrongly discriminated against because of their activity on the social media platform.

Carano claims her views were treated differently than that of other stars

According to the complaint, Carano claims that both Disney and Lucasfilm “harassed and defamed” the actress, because she wouldn’t conform to their viewpoints on issues relating to Black Lives Matter, preferred pronouns, and claims that the 2020 Presidential election wasn’t legitimate.

Carano’s suit argues that other stars, like The Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal, faced no repercussions for his more progressive posts. In a statement regarding the move, X’s head of business operations Joe Benarroch acknowledged their aid, and said they were “proud” to financially support Carano.

“As a sign of X Corp’s commitment to free speech, we’re proud to provide financial support for Gina Carano’s lawsuit, empowering her to seek vindication of her free speech rights on X and the ability to work without bullying, harassment, or discrimination,” said Benarroch.
