She won the South American Junior Championship in 1981 and reached the quarterfinals of the Orange Bowl, one of the most prestigious junior tournaments in the world.

She also played in the Fed Cup, the premier team competition for women’s tennis, in 1982 and 1983, winning three matches and losing two.

She reached a career-high ranking of 287 in singles and 222 in doubles. She retired from professional tennis in the late 1980s and became a tennis coach.

She has coached several players, including her daughter Beatriz, the most successful player she has ever trained.

Lais has helped Beatriz develop her powerful game and improve her mental strength. Under Lais’ guidance, Beatriz has won four ITF singles titles, one WTA singles title, and three WTA doubles titles.
