The Weeknd is believed to have a net worth of $30 million. Here’s how he made most of his fortune.

Abel Mekonnen Tesfaye (born February 16, 1990), better known as his stage name The Weeknd is a Canadian singer, songwriter from Scarborough, Ontario, whose parents are of Ethiopian decent.

On March 6, 2011, singer Drake talks about The Weeknd on popular social media website Twitter, arousing public curiosity. During the summer, The Weeknd puts out his first mixtape House of Ballons which is very well received by the public. The title track, based on a sample of the hit single Happy House from Siouxsie and the Banshees, is released. The Weeknd’s eclectic music combines samples from other artists such as Beach House and Aaliyah. Two other mixtapes Thursday and Echoes of Silence are released that same year.

In June 2012, during his first concert in London, The Weeknd performed a cover of Michael Jackson’s Dirty Diana in front of an audience that included singers Katy Perry and Florence Welch. In November, The Weeknd publishes a triple CD compilation, Trilogy, which combines the three previous mixtapes, with each CD containing a bonus track. The RIAA, the official award and certification body for gold and platinum records, certified Trilogy Gold in the United States shortly after its release.

On September 10, 2013, The Weeknd releases his first studio album called Kiss Land, including Live For (with Drake), Pretty, and a collaboration with Kavinsky on Odd Look. This album sold 96,000 copies in its first week. Devil May Cry appears in the soundtrack of the movie Hunger Games.


The Weeknd also collaborated with M.I.A. On the album Matangi with the tracks Exodus and Sexodus.



In 2014, he opens for famous Canadian rapper Drake on his “Would You Like A Tour” tour in Europe. In 2015, he appeared on the soundtrack for Fifty Shades of Gray, with two tracks, Earned It and Where You Belong.

in August 2015, The Weeknd releases his second studio album “Beauty Behind The Madness”, which includes his biggest hit I Can’t Feel My Face. The album sold 412,000 units in the first week.

2016 was another big year for The Weeknd, as it saw the release of his third studio album Starboy by The Weeknd which was a huge commercial success. He was also featured on key tracks for Kanye West, Beyonce and Future’s albums.


Forbes estimates that The Weeknd made close to a whopping $50 million in 2016 before expenses.


At the end of 2016, The Weelnd dropped his 3rd studio album which sold 348,000 units in it’s first week. The album includes hit singles with multi platinum producers Daft Punk, I Feel It Coming and Starboy.
