He grew up alongside his two siblings, Stephen Joseph Tyson and Lynn Antipas Tyson, in the Castle Hill neighborhood of the Bronx, later moving to Riverdale.

Tyson attended public schools in the Bronx, including PS 36 Unionport, PS 81 Robert J. Christen, the Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy (MS 141), and The Bronx High School of Science, from which he graduated in 1976.

Tyson’s interest in astronomy was sparked at a young age when he visited the Hayden Planetarium and was amazed by the night sky.

During high school, he attended astronomy courses at the Hayden Planetarium, which played a formative role in his passion for the subject.

Inspired by the teaching style of Mark Chartrand III, the planetarium director at the time, Tyson developed a deep fascination for the universe.
