Nora passed away on April 6, 2023, at 80 in the United States. She held citizenship in both Germany and the United Kingdom.

Early Life & Education

Nora Maier Forster was born into a wealthy publishing family in Munich, Germany. Her father, Franz Karl Maier, was a prosecutor who significantly brought wartime Nazis to justice. After World War II, he became the editor and publisher of the newspaper Der Tagesspiegel.

Nora grew up in Munich and developed a keen interest in music from a young age. She received her education in Munich and worked for her father’s media company.

As the daughter of the editor and publisher of Der Tagesspiegel, she inherited a significant portion of his fortune, estimated to be around AU$ 120 million, after his passing.

Personal Life

Nora Forster was married twice in her lifetime. Her first husband was Frank Forster, a popular music singer from West Germany.

Together, they had a daughter named Ariane, who later became known as Ari Up, the frontwoman and singer of the punk band The Slits. After her first marriage ended, Nora met John Lydon, also known as Johnny Rotten, of the Sex Pistols.

They got married in 1979 in Düsseldorf, Germany. Despite their 14-year age difference, Nora and John remained married for 44 years until her passing in 2023. They moved to California in the 1980s.

When Nora’s daughter Ari Up passed away in 2010, Nora and John became the guardians of Ari Up’s three children.

Career

Nora Forster began her career as a music promoter in Munich, where her home became a meeting place for renowned musicians.

She worked with acts such as Jimi Hendrix, Wishbone Ash, and Yes in West Germany. However, she found German society too restrictive and moved to London in the late 1960s with her daughter.

In London, Nora played a crucial role in financially supporting punk bands such as The Slits, the Sex Pistols, and The Clash.

Her home in Shepherd’s Bush became a gathering place for rock musicians, including Joe Strummer of The Clash, Jon Anderson of Yes, and Jimi Hendrix. Nora’s support and influence earned her the nickname “Punk Mummy Warrior.”
