Career

Lawless’s television debut came with her role in the New Zealand sketch-comedy series Funny Business, where she appeared for 2½ seasons.

She then pursued further training in acting at the William Davis Centre for Actors Study in Vancouver. In 1994, Lawless gained attention for her role in Hercules and the Amazon Women, which served as the television pilot for Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. This led to her breakthrough role as Xena in the first season of Hercules.

Lawless’s portrayal of the fierce and heroic warrior woman Xena became immensely popular, leading to the creation of the spin-off series Xena: Warrior Princess.

The show, which aired from 1995 to 2001, garnered a large fan base and brought Lawless international fame. She also appeared in other notable television series such as Battlestar Galactica, Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Salem, and Ash vs Evil Dead.

Apart from television, Lawless has showcased her talents on stage. She made her Broadway debut in 1997 in the revival of Grease, playing the character of Betty Rizzo.
