Anambra, Kogi begin free education in public schools

The governors of Anambra and Kogi states, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo and Yahaya Bello, respectively, on Thursday, announced free and compulsory education in public schools in their states.

Soludo, who made the declaration at Premier Primary School, Obosi, near Onitsha, said the gesture was aimed at actualising his vision of an all-inclusive education for schoolchildren in Anambra State.

A statement on Thursday by the Information Officer in the Anambra State Ministry of Education, Obiageli Nwankwo, quoted Soludo to have declared that education from Early Childhood Care and Development Education to Junior Secondary Schools would henceforth be free and compulsory in the state.

“Henceforth, no child within that education range would be charged school fees or any other fees to acquire education in Anambra State.

“Children of school age will no longer be deprived of access to quality education.

“Machinery will be put in place to ensure that this is effectively implemented. This administration will not look kindly on anyone who fails to comply with this pronouncement,” Soludo said.

In Kogi, Yahaya declared education free from primary up to secondary school, saying “The New Direction administration under my leadership hereby declares free education from primary to secondary school in the state and will cover examination fees for WAEC, NECO, and JAMB for all indigenes of Kogi State.”

The governor dropped the hint on Thursday while flagging off the distribution of the Federal Government’s palliatives in the state.
