EPL: He’s trying to be a hero – Schmeichel slams Man Utd star after Brighton loss

Former Manchester United goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel has hit out at defender, Lisandro Martinez for “trying to be the hero” as they lost 3-1 to Brighton on Saturday.

It was United’s third defeat in five Premier League fixtures at Old Trafford.

Danny Welbeck, Pascal Gross and Joao Pedro all scored for the Seagulls, while Hannibal Mejbri grabbed a consolation goal.

Gross made it 2-0 nine minutes into the second-half, deceiving Martinez with a clever dummy to finish off Tariq Lamptey’s pass.

Martinez made an attempt to block Gross, but was easily turned and beaten inside his own box.

Schmeichel has now questioned the player’s positioning and decision-making.

“It is kind of what happens at Manchester United at the minute, it is very individual.

“Players, for instance, Martinez here, are trying to be a hero and get in and block. People know this. If we look at him there, he puts himself in a position directly in line of the goalkeeper.

“He should be closing down rather than just standing up trying to block. If you want to block, don’t turn your body, stand tall. Clearly things aren’t right for Manchester United,” Schmeichel told Premier League Productions.
