No fewer than 800 persons suffering from cancer and other ailments, including men, women, and children across Anambra State, have received free medical treatment and surgery from the Nneka Chidoka Outreach Programme, in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

The three-day medical intervention, which ended on Wednesday, took place across various communities and it drew numerous patients who suffer cancer and various ailments.

It was sponsored by a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Osita Chidoka, in memory of his late mother, Mrs Nneka Chidoka.

The free screening and treatment included cervical and breast cancer, prostate cryotherapy, surgical interventions on four hernia patients, ultrasonography, mammography, and X-ray of the spin, among other treatments, including drugs and free eyeglasses.

Speaking during the programme, the Head of the medical team, Dr Chinonso Nwosu, said the exercise was targeted at extending quality medical care to society and raising awareness of the deadly scourge of cancer.

Nwosu said, “The aim of the medical outreach is to extend quality medical care to the society at large and raise awareness and consciousness of the deadly scourge of cancer which can be effectively managed by early detection.

“Over 800 patients have so far been treated. The cancer awareness, treatment, and surgery programme was established as a weapon for empowerment, thereby helping to eradicate the diseases to its barest minimum.”

Some of the beneficiaries, including Mr Ojinna Chukwuemeka and Miss Chisom Madu, from Onitsha, took turns to appreciate the foundation for the gesture.

Also speaking, Mrs Chika Okolo, diagnosed with cervical and breast cancer during previous medical outreach organised by the foundation said she was receiving treatment on behalf of the foundation.

Speaking, Ikechukwu Okafor, the Media Aide to Chidoka, explained that the foundation has treated no fewer than 1,000 people with different ailments.

Okafor said, “The foundation has since May 2023 treated no fewer than 1,000 women and men of different ailments, especially Cancer. The ongoing Intervention exercise is a follow-up to the cancer awareness and screening which took place in May 2023 during the burial ceremony of Chidoka’s mother.”
