4 Series that Make Netflix Worthy, and Need to Be Watched

Don’t you hate it when we have to wait patiently for months to see the ending of a TV show? Nowadays, we can watch our favorite shows in one sitting thanks to Netflix. Netflix started as a DVD-by-mail service and evolved into a giant streaming service with thousands of movies and series available. The streaming platform lets you pick your shows and watch them at your own pace. With Netflix, you can binge-watch a show on a weekend or let it be a daily guilty pleasure.

Although different competitors have entered the streaming industry, Netflix still pulls ahead at 233 million subscribers. If you’re still deciding on which series to watch, we’re here to help. Here are 4 of the most compelling series on Netflix that will get you glued to the screen.

Harry and Meghan

One of Netflix’s must-watch series is the highly anticipated documentary series: Harry and Meghan. This series became a huge topic of discussion after the couple decided to renounce their royal roles in February 2020. You might remember those insights about the timeline of how Harry and Meghan's story developed since all the media was filled with discussions about the Royal couple. Netflix series could be considered the culmination of this storyline.

Don’t be shocked to find out some royal secrets and the Firm’s relationship with race and colonialism. The first few episodes also showed some snippets of how Harry and Meghan first met and how their love story evolved.

The documentary is the highest viewed documentary premiere on Netflix with over 81.55 million hours viewed. It also received a nomination from the Hollywood Critics Association Awards in the Best Streaming Nonfiction Series in 2023.

Bridgerton

If you’re a hopeless romantic, you’re going to love this period drama adapted from Julia Quinn’s bestselling romance novel series. Another reason to watch this series is it’s produced by the award-winning Shonda Rhimes of Grey’s Anatomy fame.

The premise of the show is similar to “Gossip Girl”, where a mysterious voice guides you and narrates all the scandals within the show. Bridgerton always starts during “the season”, which is an annual period where aristocratic families host formal events to introduce their children to find suitable partners. One of those aristocratic families just happens to be the Bridgertons.

Bridgerton’s plot might seem obvious at first, but as you go through the episodes you’ll find plenty of plot twists and scandals that make this show addictive to watch. Bridgerton became so popular that Netflix decided to create a spin-off based on a character on the show, Queen Charlotte. Bridgerton also received several nominations at the Emmys in Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in 2021.

Cobra Kai

Do you miss the 80s? If so, Cobra Kai is here to reignite your memories. Almost everyone is familiar with the Karate Kid film franchise. Karate Kid told a story about a bullied kid named Daniel who gained confidence and beat his enemies by learning Karate from a Japanese Sensei. The last of the film franchise came in 2010, but the Karate Kid universe is now back with Cobra Kai.

Cobra Kai is the story of a loveable anti-hero - Johnny Lawrence, who happens to be Daniel’s bully from the film series. After his loss in the 80s to Daniel, Johnny’s life took a wrong turn and he’s now barely making ends meet working as a technician. He decided to reopen the Cobra Kai dojo and become a Sensei himself. Johnny even managed to work with Daniel to fight off a common enemy.

It’s interesting to see the story from a supposed “villain’s” point of view, and how his surroundings made him the person he was during the timeline in Karate Kid movies. It just goes to show you that everyone can change for the better and most conflicts are caused by silly misconceptions. Cobra Kai also received several nominations at the Emmys, one of them being Outstanding Comedy Series in 2021.

Squid Game

When it was first introduced, no one ever thought the Korean series would become world-famous, with a total of 2.2 billion watch hours. Squid Game is about a middle-aged Korean man who decides to compete in a deadly game to win 45.6 billion Won.

The 45.6 billion Won prize money is a symbolic call to the 456 contestants who competed in the game. All of these contestants are facing financial hardships and found no other way but to join the game to solve their issues. The game itself was arranged by a group of billionaires, watching over in a control room as a form of entertainment.

Squid Game also won numerous awards from the 2022 Emmys, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for Hwang Dong Hyuk and Outstanding Lead Actor for Lee Jeung Jae.
