LASG trains civil servants in sign language

As a way of reiterating its commitment to social inclusion for all residents of the state, especially those living with physical challenges, the Lagos State Government has held a sign language training workshop for selected officers in the civil service.

The General Manager, Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs, Mr Oluwadamilare Ogundairo, who spoke on Wednesday during the 2023 sign language training workshop held in Lagos, said the training aimed to introduce selected officers in the Lagos State Civil Service to the basic sign language skills, thereby creating an inclusive society for the hearing-impaired individuals in the state.

Ogundairo explained that the need becomes imperative to train the officers who interface daily with the public and to ensure effective interaction with them while discharging their official duties.

“Person with hearing impairment was also a person before the challenge caught up with them. So, they must be able to cohabit and relate with others in society and the government must come to a rescue.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023, emphasised the need for gender equality and social inclusion and this training is about making life comfortable for people and governance accessible.

“We must know that communication is fundamental to humanity and sign language is an identity, as Lagos is not leaving anyone behind to be captured in this identity of communication,” the General Manager said.
