Sophia Smith is an American professional footballer who plays as a forward for Portland Thorns FC and the women national team of United States. She was named NWSL Most Valuable Player (MVP) and US Soccer Player of the Year in 2022. She has appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated and also featured in Elle and Vogue magazines.

Early Life

Sophia Oliva Smith was born on August 10, 2000 in Windsor, Colorado, United States to parents Mollie and Kenny Smith. She grew up with her two older sisters Gabrielle and Savannah. She went to Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins for her high school education and proceeded to Stanfird University where she played for the Cardinal.

Career

Smith began her career at the youth level where she played at Real Colorado and then played for Srandford Cardinal at the College, helping the Cardinal win the national championship in 2019. She joined Portland Thorns FC in 2020.

At the international level, she represented the United States at the under-17, and under-20 levels before being called up to the senior team. She made her debut against Netherlands on November 27, 2020, where she became the first player born in the 2000s to compete for the senior national team. She was part of the squad for 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. She scored a brace in their 3-0 victory against Vietnam and was named Player of the match.

Aside from football, Smith appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated alongside her national team mates Rose Lavelle, Trinity Rodman, and Alex Morgan, in June 2023. She has also featured in Elle, Vogue, and Time magazines.

Smith is in a relationship with her boyfriend Michael Wilson. Wilson is an NFL player and they met when they where both at Stanford.
