Neurologists seek release of colleague kidnapped in C’River

The Nigerian Society of Neurological Sciences has called for the release of its abducted colleague, Prof. Ekanem Philip-Ephraim.

Philip-Ephraim was abducted on July 13 at her office in Calabar, Cross River State.

In a statement titled, ‘Prof. Ekanem Philip-Ephraim Abduction By Unknown Persons At Calabar Nigeria,’ the body appealed to the security agents to ensure Philip-Ephraim’s safe release.

“The Nigerian Society of Neurological Sciences is deeply saddened by the abduction and continued detention of our esteemed colleague, Prof. Ekanem Philip-Ephraim, who was taken by kidnappers on the 13th day of July 2023 at her office in Calabar.

“Prof. Ekanem Philip-Ephraim is a very senior doctor, an experienced teacher, a very cherished and committed neurologist, and a mother who has devoted her life and resources to the service of the downtrodden in society and still has so many responsibilities unaccomplished.

“We are devastated by this incident and are deeply concerned about her well-being, especially after several days in captivity.

“We know the security agents are working tirelessly to ensure her safe release; we, however, urge them to sustain the efforts and ensure no stone is left unturned for her safe return,” the body said.

It also called for prayers for Philip-Ephraim’s release.

Also, members of the Nigerian Medical Association, Cross River State, on Tuesday staged a peaceful march to the Cross River House of Assembly to protest against Philip-Ephraim’s kidnap.

The doctors, who came out in their numbers, carried placards with inscriptions such as, “Set Cross River Free From The Stranglehold of Kidnappers,” and “Make Cross River Safe Again,” among others.

Speaking at the assembly complex, Chairman of NMA, Cross River Chapter, Dr. Felix Archibong, said the situation of doctors in the state had got to the point where they were afraid of going about their daily activities.
