Foundation seeks investment in medical research
The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research Foundation, Yaba, Lagos, has called for more investment in research.
Speaking during a working visit to the NIMR Foundation, Chairman, Board of Trustees, NIMR Foundation, and former Minister of Works, Mr Babatunde Fashola, in a statement by the institute, explained that foundations across the country should be encouraged to invest in research.
“Investments in research will help the economy. It creates jobs, it creates a value chain of support, supply inputs and so much more.
“But more importantly, the investment in research is also very, very reliable in terms of return on investment. I was reading a report on the research that shows that every dollar spent on immunisation yields a return of over $40 – just immunisation alone, and immunisation is a product of research.
“This is another sector of our economy that should be opened up and it requires all of us to come together, not just complain about government. And this is the work that we at the NIMR Foundation’s Board of Trustees have done.”
Fashola added that although he was not a scientist, his duty at NIMR was to raise funds for research.
“What we are doing here, Aunty Moji Makanjuola, Prof. Oye Gureje, Prof. Oni Idigbe, the DG Prof. Babatunde Salako, the 14th Emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, our job is just to raise funds, to support the Federal Government owned NIMR to effectively finance and undertake research,” he said.
