Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor dies at 56

Popular Irish singer and songwriter, Sinéad O’Connor, has died, one year after losing her son, Shane.

The singer’s family released a statement on Wednesday announcing her passing, local media, Irish Times, reports.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,” the statement read.

O’Connor rose to fame after the release of her “Nothing Compares 2 U” single which was written by famous star, Prince.

The song topped several charts across the world and was named the number-one single in 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards.

The singer had a troubled childhood and a controversial career. She revealed during an Oprah Winfrey Show in 2007, that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and battled with suicidal thoughts.

She sparked outrage in 1992 after ripping up a photo of Pope John Paul II during a Saturday Night Life show, as a protest against sexual abuses in the Roman Catholic Church.

The singer is survived by three children, Jake Reynolds, Brigidine Roisin Waters, and Francis Neil Bonadio.

Her second son, Shane, was found dead on the 7th of January 2022, two days after he was reported missing from Newbridge County Kildare, Ireland.
