Osun dredges 25 streams, rivers to avert flooding

As parts of its erosion and flooding control, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Monday said his administration had embarked on dredging of not less than 25 streams and rivers across the state, to ensure free flow of water.

Adeleke spoke on the campus of Osun State University in Osogbo, at this year’s International Sustainable Development Dialogue with the theme: ‘Making and unmaking Africa: Global Development and Environmental Humanities,’ organised by the Global Affairs and Sustainable Development Institute.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Sanitation, Mr Timothy Olawuni, the governor expressed his administration’s commitment to tacking environmental challenges, just as he urged residents to desist from blocking waterways with dirt.

He said, “Currently not less than 25 streams and rivers are receiving interventions ranging from dredging, desilting and clearing of clogged culverts.

“It is important however to appeal to the people to desist from actions that could exacerbate this avoidable problem,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor, UNIOSUN, Prof. Clement Adebooye, expressed hope that various presentations and robust discussion at the lecture would be useful in policymaking.
