Celtic set to re-appoint Brendan Rodgers

Celtic are close to finalising a deal to bring former manager Brendan Rodgers back to the club, 90min understands.

The Scottish champions have been working quickly to identify the man they want to replace Ange Postecoglou, who recently joined Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

Celtic had made a shortlist of candidates that included Manchester City's coach Enzo Maresca and AZ Alkmaar boss Pascal Jansen, but Rodgers has emerged as their top target.

The Hoops' owner Dermot Desmond has been leading talks with Rodgers, who has agreed in principle to return to the club, and the two of them are now set to finalise a deal. Rodgers is understood to have made demands around transfer funding which Desmond has promised to fulfil in order to help him revamp the squad.

Rodgers is currently unattached after leaving Leicester City towards the end of last season. He had been approached by Leeds United about the possibility of taking charge at Elland Road, but 90min understands the ex-Liverpool manager had little interest in working in the Championship at this point in his career.

Now Rodgers is ready to return to Celtic Park, four years after he departed for the Leicester job. Rodgers is set to bring a number of familiar staff with him back to Celtic including Glen Driscoll and Jack Lyons, however his previous assistant Chris Davies is being strongly linked with the Swansea City job and is unlikely to make the move.

Rodgers also hopes to persuade John Kennedy to stay at the club, rather than take up an offer to join Postecoglou at Tottenham.
