2023 AFCON qualifier: Leone Stars dream repeat of 2001 upset against Super Eagles

Leone Stars of Sierra Leone head coach, John Keister insisted the team can repeat the 2001 shocking victory against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Keister was part of the Leone Stars which consisted majorly of local players that defeated the star-studded Super Eagles 1-0 in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Freetown in 2001.

Both teams will lock horns again on Sunday, this time in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Monrovia, Liberia.

The gaffer believed his team can create another big upset by beating the Super Eagles again.

“I remember in 2001, I was part of the Sierra Leone team that beat Nigeria 1-0 and this was when no one expected anything from us,” Keister stated in a video interview posted on the Facebook page of the Sierra Leone Football Association.

“I have that feeling again with this team going to Liberia to face Nigeria, despite the challenges we have with players suspended, several personal issues and injuries, that we can do it again.”

The Super Eagles came from behind to beat the Leone Stars 2-1 in the reverse fixture last June.
