Prior to entering Nigerian politics, Akume worked in the Benue State civil service, eventually rising to the position of Permanent Secretary.

Akume ran for governor on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform after the country’s return to democracy in 1999.

He was elected governor of Benue State in 1999 and served two four-year terms.

He was elected to the Nigerian Senate to represent the people of Benue as a senator for Benue North-West.

He successfully ran for re-election to a second term in office on the PDP platform in 2003.

Following his second term as Governor of Benue State, Akume ran for and won the Senate seat of Benue North West Senatorial District in the 2007 National Assembly elections.

In the April 2011 elections, Akume was re-elected Senator for Benue North-West on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

He received 261,726 votes to defeat Terngu Tsegba of the PDP, who received 143,354 votes.

In 2015, he was re-elected to the Senate on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He was the chairman of the Senate Committee on the Army and a ranking member of the Senate. Muhammadu Buhari nominated and confirmed him as a minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nigeria.

A phone conversation between Akume and Ortom was leaked on the internet in January 2020. Ortom accused Akume of stealing over N2 billion before leaving office in 2007. Ortom threatened Akume with dragging him before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

He warned Akume not to call him a thief because he had not stolen from Benue state funds.
