Rumors of an Alita: Battle Angel 2 have floated around for years. But according to a new report from World of Reel, the film won’t happen unless James Cameron steps behind the camera.

According to the latest report, Cameron — who wrote the screenplay for the original film — is being asked to direct Alita: Battle Angel 2. While Cameron and producer Jon Landau are trying to get a sequel made, Disney CEO Bob Iger reportedly won’t give the go-ahead on the project unless Cameron is the one directing. The first film was directed by Robert Rodriguez, but it seems like Disney wants Cameron to be the one at the helm of this.

The report goes on to mention that Cameron has been reluctant to accept due to his busy schedule, which includes Last Train from Hiroshima, as well as the third and fourth Avatar films. However, World of Reel notes that Cameron is considering the offer.

The 2019 film was directed by Robert Rodriguez from a screenplay written by James Cameron, Laeta Kalogridis, and Rodriguez. Based on the manga series Gunnm by Yukito Kishiro, Alita: Battle Angel was produced by Cameron and Jon Landau.

Alita: Battle Angel also starred Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly (Top Gun: Maverick), Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Green Book), Ed Skrein (Deadpool), and Jackie Earle Haley. It was 20th Century Fox’s last film to release before its monumental Disney acquisition. The film earned a worldwide gross of over $405 million at the box office.
