Gov poll: Search for my running mate ongoing, says Sylva
The Bayelsa State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Timipre Sylva, has said he will, at the right time, unveil his running mate ahead of the November 11, 2023 poll.
Sylva hinted that he and the state chapter of the APC were still searching for a suitable person that would join him to contest the governorship polls.
The immediate-past Minister of State for Petroleum Resource stated this while answering a question during a live radio interview in Yenagoa, the state capital.
He said the potential deputy governorship candidate must have the qualities to complement him, describing it as a vital component of the ticket.
Sylva polled a total of 50,061 votes to emerge as the standard bearer of the APC at the primary election conducted on April 14 and 13, beating five other contestants, including the former governorship candidate, David Lyon.
He said, “The issue of running mate is what I have to do at the appropriate time. We are still looking around to get an appropriate person to complement me.
“A running mate is a very important aspect of the ticket and you need to have somebody that can complement you; who has qualities that you don’t have so that you can work together. We are still watching.”
Sylva comes from the Brass Local Government Area in Bayelsa East and in 2015 he picked his running mate, Wilberforce Igiri, from the Southern Ijaw LGA in Bayelsa Central on the platform of the APC.
The incumbent Governor, Douye Diri and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the forthcoming polls hails from the Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA in Bayelsa Central while his deputy, Lawrence Ehwrudjakpo, is from the Sagbama LGA in Bayelsa West.
Some party sources said the APC and Sylva were weighing political options and considering Bayelsa Central and West to get a potential running mate that would be acceptable as well as complement the party’s governorship candidate.
