May Day: Obaseki, Fubara, others hail workers

As Nigerian workers celebrate this year’s May Day today, the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has expressed his administration’s commitment to improving the quality of work life for workers by implementing initiatives that promote employee engagement, job satisfaction, and a sense of purpose in their work.

This was as the governor-elect, Delta State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, lauded Nigerian workers “for their absolute dedication to the genuine development of the country.”

Also a former Osun State governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dotun Babayemi, called on governments at all levels in the country to create good working conditions to stimulate the economy and discourage migration of Nigerians, especially the youth in the quest for greener pastures.

In a statement on Sunday to commemorate May Day, Obaseki said, “Our commitment to workers’ welfare extends beyond just remuneration and benefits. We are investing towards ensuring that our workers have a positive and fulfilling work experience. Our goal is to transform the traditionally mundane and unexciting public sector work environment into an engaging and enjoyable one.”

On his part, Fubara, in a statement issued from his Media office and signed by Bon Onyedi, noted that “Nigerian workers have been steadfast and committed to their duties despite the global economic challenges that affected the country’s economy in recent times.”

Also, Babayemi, in a statement, urged the government to put in place a permanent solution to the recurring issue of non-payment of pensions and gratuities of retirees.

Similarly, the Peoples Redemption Party, in a statement by its National Chairman, Falalu Bello, advocated welfare and rights of Nigerian workers, while hailing their contributions to national growth and development.

Bello, who lamented the failure of the present government to prioritise the safety and well-being of workers, further expressed worry over workers’ loss of jobs and harsh working conditions due to the government’s poor handling of the economy and bad governance in general.
