Police arrest alleged local accomplice in planned herders attack on Benue community
It would be recalled that Governor Samuel Ortom at the end of the recent State Security Council meeting, raised concern about the criminal acts of some native criminal elements who connivance with armed herdsmen to attack communities in the state.
The Security Council had also fingered some traditional rulers of failing in their responsibilities to check the menace.
The Governor expressed the same worry when he visited Mgban community in Nyiev Council Ward of Guma, LGA where over 40 Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, and members of the host community were brutally murdered by suspected armed herders recently.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent, SP, Catherine Anene, in a statement issued Tuesday in Makurdi, the suspect was arrested when seen “suspiciously wondering along the Taraba-Benue border.
“During the investigation, the suspect confessed to having gone to the forest to liaise with criminal herders to pay him so that he can facilitate an attack on a village in Anyiin.
“Further investigation is ongoing to reveal more information about the suspect’s involvement in recent attacks and possible arrest of other suspects involved in carrying out such heinous crimes.”
