Jumat: FCID, National Mosque police detain PUNCHman

Police officers attached to the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Federal Capital Territory, and the National Mosque, Abuja have arrested and detained a PUNCH photojournalist, Kayode Jaiyeola, for taking pictures during Jumat service on Friday.

Jaiyeola was arrested by an FCID officer, Ahmed Abubakar, and handed over to the police officers attached to the National Mosque.

Speaking with our correspondent on phone, Jaiyeola said, “I have been detained at a police post at the National Mosque. I only came here on official duty to take pictures of the Jumat service, but police from the FCT FCID arrested me and handed me over to the police officers attached to the mosque.”

However, both police departments are yet to explain the reason for the continued detention of the reporter despite being informed that he was on official duty, following an inquiry by our correspondent.

When contacted, Ahmed Abubakar said he had handed over the matter to the National Mosque police post.

Abubakar said, “I have handed him over to the police at the National Mosque. My only duty now is to write my statement and document his arrest. It’s no longer in my capacity as I didn’t detain him.”

The National Mosque police post could not be reached as of press time.
