Potter had taken over from Thomas Tuchel in September, signing a five-year deal at the club, but failed to turn around the Blues' fortunes this season with the club sitting embarassingly in 11th place in the Premier League after 28 games.

Following the most recent defeat to Aston Villa, 90min understands that Boehly organised a crunch meeting with Potter on Sunday morning. Going into the meeting sources have explained that the Chelsea controlling owner was keen to give the manager more time to turn the club's fortunes around, however after the meeting a decision was made to cut ties.

A number of Chelsea players are believed to be left shock by how quickly Boehly has move to sack Potter.

Boehly and fellow controlling owner Behdad Eghbali has released a statement on the club's official website thanking Potter for his contributions to the club:

"On behalf of everyone at the club, we want to thank Graham sincerely for his contribution to Chelsea. We have the highest degree of respect for Graham as a coach and as a person. He has always conducted himself with professionalism and integrity and we are all disappointed in this outcome.

"Along with our incredible fans, we will all be getting behind Bruno and the team as we focus on the rest of the season.

"We have 10 Premier League games remaining and a Champions League quarter final ahead. We will put every effort and commitment into every one of those games so that we can end the season on a high."
