Dr. Alex Otti, a well-known banker and entrepreneur, has been declared the winner of the Abia state governorship election by INEC. He set out on a mission to free the country from decades of misrule and put it on the road to progress and shared prosperity. In 2015, he ran for governor of Abia state as a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Alex has declared the election winner after the court of appeals removed Okezie Ikpeazu of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), but the decision was overturned by Nigeria’s Supreme Court.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Alex Otti, the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), the winner of the governorship election in Abia state.
This follows the completion of the compilation of outstanding Obingwa LGA results.
Otti received 175,467 votes to defeat Okey Ahiwe, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate who received 88,529 votes.
Thugs stormed the electoral commission’s office in Obingwa LGA on Monday, halting the collation of results in Abia.
The attackers held INEC officials hostage, before releasing them, prompting the electoral commission to request a review of the process.
Otti was reportedly in the lead with over 80,000 votes when collation was halted.
The victory is the LP’s first in the federation-wide governorship election on March 18.
The party won the presidential election in all five southeast states — Abia, Enugu, Anambra, Imo, and Ebonyi.

Dr. Alex Otti attended Ngwa High School in Aba and Secondary Technical School in Okpualangwa in Abia State, where he graduated as the Best Student in his Set during the School Certificate Examinations. He then continued his education at the University of Port Harcourt, where he earned a First Class Honors degree in Economics in 1988.
Alex Otti distinguished himself at the University of Port Harcourt by graduating not only as the Best Student of the Faculty of Social Sciences but also as the Overall Best Graduating Student for that year. Alex Otti not only excelled academically at university, but he also demonstrated his mettle by taking on various roles such as News Editor for the school newsletter, Uniport Mirror.
In addition, in 1986, he served as treasurer for the University Chapter of the Nigerian Economic Students’ Association (NESA), and the following year, he was elected President of the organization.
Alex Otti began his banking career in 1989 as an Operations Officer at Nigerian International Bank, a subsidiary of Citibank New York. Following that, he joined Nigerian Intercontinental Merchant Bank Ltd. He worked at Intercontinental Bank in both the Treasury and Financial Services unit and the Corporate Banking Division.
He joined Societe Bancaire Nigeria Ltd (Merchant Bankers), a subsidiary of Banque SBA Paris, in 1992 and rose through the ranks to the position of Senior Manager. He then moved on to the United Bank for Africa (UBA) as Principal Manager, where he was in charge of the corporate banking sector for the entire South Division, as well as growing the bank’s Oil and Gas business.
In 2000, he was promoted to the position of Assistant General Manager due to his outstanding performance. He joined First Bank of Nigeria, PLC as Assistant General Manager in May 2001, with the sole responsibility of growing the bank’s Energy Sector. He was promoted to Deputy General Manager in April 2004, and a year later was named Executive Director, Commercial Banking.
This was followed by a promotion to Executive Director South Directorate, where he was in charge of over 140 branches in the country’s South-South and South-East geopolitical zones.
He moved from First Bank Nigeria PLC to Diamond Bank as Group Managing Director/CEO in March 2011, where he led the bank through a major transformation. Alex is a Harvard Business School alumnus who has taken numerous international courses, including the Executive Development Programs at Columbia Business, Stanford Business, and Wharton Business School (University of Pennsylvania).
Alex is highly respected for his wealth of knowledge and serves on the boards of several companies as well as two of Nigeria’s leading universities. Babcock University bestowed an honorary Doctorate Degree on him in 2009, and the University of Port Harcourt bestowed an honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) Degree on him in 2012.
He resigned from his position at Diamond Bank to run for governor of Abia State on the APG platform.
