Teach children to name abusers, agency tells parents

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has urged parents to train their children well to prevent them from falling prey to sexual or violent abuses.

The agency engaged over 200 parents and caregivers in the protection of children against all kinds of abuses during a workshop in collaboration with the Office of Education Quality Assurance.

The event, which was held in Lagos, was tagged, “Parents Association Conference on Child Safeguarding.”

Speaking at the conference, the Head of Public Affairs, DSVA, Adejoke Ladenegan-Oginni, highlighted the need for parents to train and instill good values in their children.

She said, “Train your children well and you will be the one to enjoy it tomorrow; instill good ethics into your children as parents, and the community, the nation, and even the world will enjoy them.

“We are a reflection of our society, and we are not getting it right anymore. It all starts with our parenting and that is why we are where we are today.”

She advised parents to teach their children how to identify abuse and abusers.

“Teach your children to value themselves, to be self-sustaining, confident in themselves; teach them to know how to flee from any appearance that is seductive or abusive; from people that will lure them to abuse with money or gifts.”

Speaking on punishment and discipline, the head of the Psychology Department, DSVA, Olive Oluwagbemileke, advised parents to adopt the right discipline method to teach children to be confident.

“Your responsibility to your child as a parent is to help your child become self-resilient, reliant, respectful, and have self-control, and you can do this if you adopt the right discipline method.” she said.
