Halpern was born to Gloria and Melvin Halpern in Potomac, Maryland. He participated in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments in 1989 and 1990 as a young player for the Washington Capitals minor ice hockey team.

At the time Halpern attended Winston Churchill High School in Potomac but there was no hockey team there. Halpern moved in with future The Bachelorette winner Ian McKee at St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, where he later graduated in order to pursue his hockey dreams. He afterwards enrolled at and completed his studies at Princeton University.

He competed for the Princeton Tigers men’s ice hockey team there for four varsity seasons. In 1998 and 1999, he was named to the ECAC second team All-Star, and in 1999, he scored 22 goals to tie for the conference’s most goals and share the Roper Trophy for academic and athletic excellence at Princeton.

Jeff Halpern’s Professional Career

Halpern, who went undrafted, made his NHL debut with the Washington Capitals during the 1999–2000 season. In 79 games, he scored 18 goals, had 11 assists, and had a +21 rating. He was the first Capitals player to have been born and raised in the metro region of Washington, D.C.

He concluded the 2003–04 NHL season with 19 goals and 27 assists in 79 games, which was his finest scoring season to date.

Halpern played for the Kloten Flyers and HC Ajoie in Switzerland during the 2004–05 NHL lockout before joining the Capitals once the lockout was over. Halpern was selected the 12th team captain in the history of the Washington Capitals on September 23, 2005. He not only had a career-high 33 assists, but he also scored 11 goals in the NHL in 2005-2006.

Halpern signed a four-year contract with the Dallas Stars on July 5, 2006, after departing as a free agent from the Capitals.

Halpern was exchanged for Brad Richards and Johan Holmqvist on February 26, 2008, along with Mike Smith, Jussi Jokinen, and a fourth-round draft pick in 2009. In his first game for the Lightning, Halpern notched a goal and an assist. Halpern had a significant hot streak after being acquired by the Lightning, scoring 10 goals and 18 points in 19 games.

As one of only two players to participate in 83 games, or one more than a team’s entire schedule, as a result of his trade to Tampa Bay, he also topped the league in games played during the 2007–08 NHL season. Brian Campbell was the other. Halpern participated in 52 NHL games in 2008-2009, recording seven goals and nine assists.

The United States national team’s captain for the 2008 World Championships in Canada was Halpern. He injured his anterior cruciate ligament while playing in a 5-4 loss against the Canadian squad in the first round on May 6, 2008, and was scheduled to miss 6 to 8 months of action.

This happened during the same match that injured USA goaltender Tim Thomas was forced to leave the squad for. 

On March 3, 2010, Halpern was transferred from the Lightning to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Teddy Purcell and a 2010 third-round draft selection.

Halpern and the Montreal Canadiens agreed to a one-year contract on September 7, 2010. On July 1, 2011, he agreed to a one-year, $825,000 contract to join his former team, the Washington Capitals.

On July 9, 2012, Halpern signed a one-year contract with the New York Rangers as a veteran free agent. Halpern made his Rangers debut on the fourth line in the truncated season opener against the Boston Bruins on January 19, 2013, after the 2012–13 season was postponed due to the lockout. Halpern, a checking line forward with the Rangers, registered one point in 30 games before being claimed off waivers by the Montreal Canadiens on March 23, 2013. He played for the Rangers and Canadiens in 46 games the season, recording a goal and two assists.

He has 147 goals and 214 assists for 361 points in 907 regular-season games throughout his previous 13 NHL seasons. In the 39 Stanley Cup playoff games he played in, he added seven goals and 14 points.

Halpern committed to TPS of the Finnish Elite League on September 16, 2013, and was scheduled to make his SM-liiga debut in October. NHL clause was incorporated in his contract. In eight games with the team, he scored four goals.

Halpern signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Arizona Coyotes after quitting the Finnish team on 12th October 2013. In the NHL, he would be paid $600,000, and in the AHL, $75,000.
