Harry Kane becomes England's all-time top men's goalscorer

Harry Kane has moved clear at the top of England's all-time men's goalscoring charts after netting his 54th goal for the Three Lions in Thursday's meeting with Italy.

Kane had been tied with former Manchester United and Everton striker Wayne Rooney on 53 but claimed the record for his own as he thundered home a penalty shortly before half-time in the Europea qualifier.

The Tottenham talisman needed just 81 appearances for his country to break the record, besting the electric pace set by fellow goalscoring greats like Rooney, Gary Lineker and Sir Bobby Charlton.

Kane made his England debut in March 2015 at the age of 21, coming off the bench and scoring just 80 seconds later in a 4-0 win over Lithuania.

He would establish himself as England's starter by the end of that year and has been leading the Three Lions ever since, even being handed the captain's armband in 2017.

Plenty of records have fallen as Kane's career progressed. He won the 2018 World Cup Golden Boot before breaking the record for most goals in a calendar year for England, ending 2021 with 16 strikes to his name.
