NCoS destroys N150m items seized from inmates
The Nigerian Correctional Service says it has destroyed illegal items worth over N150,000,000 seized from inmates in its facilities across the country.
The NCoS spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, said this in a statement on Thursday.
According to the statement, the prohibited items that were seized over time via proactive measures and routine cell searches by officers and men of the Service.
Umar said the seized items included cell phones, SIM cards, laptops, hard drugs, power banks, and other electronic devices.
The Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, was quoted as saying that the destruction of the seized items was pursuant to sections 51 and 52 of the Service Standing Orders.
“Nababa further stressed that searching of cells will be a continuous exercise to ensure that inmates in custody comply with standard operating procedures which give room for rehabilitation and reformatory programmes to thrive.
“According to him, returning the inmates into society as self-sustained persons and employers of labour is paramount in the agenda of the service at this time.”
Nababa thanked the officers for their display of professionalism and assured the general public that the service would not relent in its efforts towards ridding all custodial centres of prohibited items.
The CG further stressed that the searching of cells will be a continuous exercise to ensure that inmates in custody comply with standard operating procedures, which gives room for rehabilitation and reformatory programmes to thrive.
