Breaking: INEC to conduct supplementary elections in Doguwa / Tudun Wada Federal Constituency

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Wednesday, reversed itself, saying that there is no winner in the February 25 National Assembly elections in Doguwa and Tudunwada federal constituency of Kano State.

INEC said it will conduct supplementary elections in Doguwa / Tudun Wada Federal Constituency where the election results were said to have been declared under duress.

The Returning Officer for the Federal Constituency elections held, on February 25, Professor Ibrahim Adamu Yakasai, announced the decision of the electoral umpire after reviewing the results of the elections held in the area.

Prof. Yakasai said that INEC in compliance with the provisions of the electoral act has reviewed the results.

He stated that there were cancellation of results in 13 polling units while the reviewed election results stand as follows, APC 39,732, NNPP 34, 798, and PDP 7,091.

He explained that the total number of votes in the 13 polling units that were canceled stood at 6,917 as against the over 4000 votes margin between APC and NNPP.

He said INEC will conduct supplementary elections in the affected units to determine the winner of the February 25, Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency polls.

Recall that INEC had earlier declared Alhassan Doguwa, Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, who contested on the All Progressives Congress (APC), a winner of the exercise.

However, the electoral umpire delisted his name from the reps-elect and failed to issue him a certificate of return.

The commission had said he was declared winner of the election under duress.

This followed the arrest of Doguwa in connection with the violence which broke out in the constituency during the collation of the election.

At least two people were killed when a secretariat of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) was set ablaze while in the area.

The police had arraigned the ranking lawmaker at a magistrate’s court which remanded him in prison.

But Doguwa was granted a N500 million bail and barred from Saturday’s election.

On Wednesday, Professor Ibrahim Adamu Yakasai, the Returning Officer for the election, announced the new development in Doguwa’s constituency.
