Southampton close to agreeing terms with Jesse Marsch

Southampton are close to agreeing a deal with Jesse Marsch to make the American their new manager following Sunday’s dismissal of Nathan Jones, 90min understands.

Marsch himself was sacked by Leeds little more than a week ago but already looks set for a quick return to Premier League management after emerging as Southampton’s first choice.

Sources have confirmed to 90min that the Saints are keen on Marsch after he impressed them in talks held last week.

The 49-year-old, who made his name in Europe after trading New York Red Bulls for Red Bull Salzburg – where he coached a certain Erling Haaland, is particularly keen to stay in England.

Southampton are confident they will have a new boss in place by the time they are due to travel to London to face Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.

Jones was shown the door at St. Mary’s following a home defeat to Wolves at the weekend. That result marked a continuation of dreadful recent form – nine losses in their last 10 Premier League games – that had seen the Saints slip to the foot of the table.

Marsch initially kept Leeds in the Premier League last season when he was appointed successor to the popular Marcelo Bielsa just under 12 months ago. But the club pulled the trigger earlier this month following a run of seven games without a win, and only two wins in 17 games since August.
