The Spaniard has often face the brunt of criticism in recent years. Following Erik ten Hag's appointment, there have been question marks over his suitability to play from the back.

De Gea marked his 400th Premier League game for United with a clean sheet in their 2-0 win at Leeds on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, Maguire insisted that De Gea faces more pressure because of his role in such a big team, but has often handled it well.

"It’s a pleasure to play in front of him," Maguire said.

"To play 400 games for this club in the most scrutinised position in world football, that just shows how good he's been over the years for club. He’s a legend and is performing at the highest level this season and he’ll keep doing that."

Maguire made a rare start for United in Sunday's victory, and when asked if he hopes to be a more regular fixture in Ten Hag's side, he replied: "Winning is the most important thing. I put the team miles before myself. It's a good one for the fans.

"It's not about me, it's about the team and about the club being successful. Obviously I want to be a big part of it. The only thing you can do is train well and make sure you're ready when the chance comes."
