Jason Denayer is a Belgian professional footballer who plays as a defender for the national team of Belgium.

He began his career professionally on loan at Celtic and was named the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year after helping his side secure the Scottish Premiership and Scottish League Cup.

Early Life

Jason Denayer was born Jason Gregory Marianne Denayer born on June 28, 1995, in Jette, Belgium. He was born to a Belgian father named Andre Denayer and a Congolese mother.

Career

Denayer began his football career at FC Ganshoren and then Anderlecht at the tender age of six. He joined the JMG Academy in Lier at the age of 13. He played as a striker before he was converted to a defender.

He moved to England to find a new club. He had a trial at Liverpool but there was no agreement and later went for a trial at Manchester City.

He joined Manchester City Academy in 2013, and signed his first professional contract after a successful trial, in the summer transfer window. He participated for the club’s campaign in the UEFA Youth League, where he made eight appearances while scoring once in a 6-0 win against Bayern Munich.

He was signed on a season-long loan from Manchester City by Celtic, on August 12, 2014. He made his debut in a 6-1 win over Dundee United, in the Scottish Premiership, and was named Man of the match after finding the back of the net.

He went on loan to Galatasaray in August 2015, and made his debut for the club in a 2-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

He also went on loan to Sunderland in August 2016 and later resigned by Galatasaray on a season-long loan deal in August 2017.

Denayer signed for the Ligue 1 club Lyon on a four-year deal for €6.5 m, on August 21, 2018.

Denayer represented Belgium at the U19 and U21 before he was called up to the Belgian national team for their Euro 2016 qualification match against Andora.

He made his senior international debut for Belgium on 31 March 2015 in a UEFA Euro 2016 qualifier away to Israel.
