Kai Havertz angry at discussions about his best position

Kai Havertz was frustrated at questions over what his best position is following Germany's World Cup defeat to Japan.

Havertz underwhelmed leading the line for his nation as Germany fell to a 2-1 defeat in their opening bout in Qatar, with many doubting his credentials to lead the line at the top level.

Much has been made of the forward's abilities in front of goal, having endured similar struggles at Chelsea over the past few years.

When asked about it in a press conference, the 23-year-old was honest: "The position issue is really getting on my nerves now.

"Everyone knows that I can play on the right, on the left, as a No. 9 and as a No. 10. Of course the positions are different, but I can play anything up front."

He added: "I really like the No. 9 position, but I also know that as a striker you have to score goals. If I play there again on Sunday, I'll give my best once more."

Despite admitting his preference is to play as a team's main striker, Havertz has struggled to show a consistently prolific vein of form. He's hit just three goals from 13 games in the Premier League this season and failed to step up in the absence of Romelu Lukaku, and struggled to get into the game at all against Japan.

Hansi Flick is particularly short of out-and-out striker options with the national team due to Havertz's versatility and Thomas Muller also being a more fluid attacker. 29-year-old Niclas Fullkrug came off the bench in matchday one, and could get a chance from the start if a change of tact is needed.
